Active Hurricanes Confronting Is It Possible Or Still Just A Dream

Active Hurricanes Confronting Is It Possible Or Still Just A Dream

With Hurricane Irene active and moving  towards the east coast states scientists and engineers cannot help recalling the dream of natural weather disasters control.

Control of such phenomenon comprises two distinct approaches: passive and active.

In the passive approach the effort is based on monitoring the hurricane to determine its present location, forecasting its expected trajectory and finally taking the necessary measures needed including reinforcing most vulnerable buildings and evacuating people from the places with the utmost predicted losses and casualities.

On the other hand the active approach includes also the monitoring and forecasting but when it comes to evacuation to trade part of the evacuation with designing proper technical units and deploying them some selected locations with the aim to consume some amount of the total energy that the hurricane contains.

Like every other engineering issue the cost of the measures you take are related to the damages and casualities you are trying to avoid. This means that one streamline of the research is to put together the history of casualities and damages of the hurricanes in the last 20 years for example.

As example the hurricane Floyd was responsible for 57 deaths, $4.5 billion in damages and widespread flooding that kept entire communities underwater for weeks.

While the passive approach is based on research and decisions of National organs, the active approach based on designing certain specific technical units can accomodate overseas Intellectuals. Science does not recognize borders between countries. The Human race is a Human race.
